Work Description:

Using digital storytelling, alongside the ephemeral movement of four women, Britt Fishel and Artists will share narrative pathways of the women accused of witchcraft in Salem, in 1692.

False Tongues focuses around the women accused and their peril, while navigating their place as scapegoats within their community.

The accusations primarily targeted women from various backgrounds, including marginalized members of society such as widows, women of lower social standing, and those who did not conform to Puritan norms. Many women were accused based on hearsay, rumors, and spectral evidence.

The trials resulted in the execution of 20 people, most of whom were women.

During the rehearsal process, Britt Fishel and Artists went deep into the history, studying the emotional climate and parameters that led to these events, which included a trip to Salem, where the artists visited the witch museums and memorial sites, to deepen the research further.

Through performance, we hope to share truth where there are misconceptions, find empathy though lived experiences, and examine a cautionary tale of mass hysteria, the dangers of superstition, and the consequences of societal paranoia.

The Listeners examines the lengths to which we, as Americans, are willing to go to find a sense of place and purpose, and the way in which confident, charming leaders can exploit these needs to their own ends.

A middle-class mother (soprano Nicole Heaston in her company debut) living in a southwestern U.S. suburb notices a “hum,” a high-frequency environmental noise that only a select few people, the "Listeners,” can hear. A community organization quickly forms to solve the mystery of the hum, but when the de facto leader (Kevin Burdette) suggests a spiritual significance, the meetings become increasingly cult-like. Is this community of “Listeners” on a collision course with destruction?

A mouth-watering interplay between the enigmas of feminine triune across the ages and the symbolic apple which satiates our collective hunger, this poetry and movement work features three international dance artists and one child performer.

Harkening to the classic art pieces and mythology, blended with spoken word and verse, audiences travel to a world where generations connect across time and space, growing hunger and poetry which comes to life.

Filled with daring physicality and poignance, Fruit on Her Lips delivers wisdom, destruction, sweetness, and gravity.

Rhythm Bath blends performance, meditation, and wonder, inviting you to sense the dance happening around you. Come and go as you like—explore the accessible, transporting space of shifting fabric, light, sound, and movement. Dancers perform in the space intermittently over the course of an hour.

Rhythm Bath is a dance performance-installation that investigates what makes performance environments welcoming to both neurodiverse and neurotypical audiences. It has been designed from the start with neurodiverse advisors, with choreography by Susan Marshall in collaboration with the dancers, and set design by Mimi Lien.

The Philadelphia Matter 1972/2020

choreographer/director/writer David Gordon premieres his first new screen work in two decades with a “virtual” performance company of 30+ Philadelphia artists working remotely to record video material on everything from iPhones to professional cameras. Gordon then dissected, assembled, and collaged this movement with visual scores and archival works in collaboration with video artist Jorge Cousineau. The Philadelphia Matter – 1972/2020 cast includes Wally Cardona and Pick Up Performance Co(s) members Karen Graham and Valda Setterfield.

A new quartet by dancer-choreographer Paul Matteson draws from children’s books of courage and Early Buddhist chants to create an intertwining world of dance and story. Performed by Sydney Donovan, Brandon Graf, Paul Matteson and Andrew Smith.

Paul Matteson is an assistant professor in the School of Dance at University of the Arts. His current choreography explores the imaginative intertwining of text and movement. Paul was a member of the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company from 2008 to 2013. He has also worked with David Dorfman Dance, Lisa Race, Terry Creach, Peter Schmitz, Keith Johnson, Neta Pulvermacher and others. Matteson received a New York Dance and Performance Award (BESSIE) for his “Body of Work” as a performer. another piece apart, his duet with longtime collaborator Jennifer Nugent, premiered at New York Live Arts and the Boston Dance Complex in 2018 and will be performed at The Bates Dance Festival in the summer of 2020.

Description of work from Lilach Orenstein…

“I engage with questions about the female stereotype and its place in society. Why is that in 2019 we are still operating on the basis of stereotypes which are from an era of complete male dominance?

During the performance, the audience watches through designed openings which define, limit and shape the content it can watch. My goal is to emphasize our need to see beyond the “glasses” that were made and put there “for us” ever since. The dancing material is inspired by love positions. In most positions, the man manipulates the woman’s body. As women, we mustn’t accept on ourselves frames which are too small to contain us, stand in silence before definitions which narrow or limit us and explain to us who we are. We should never be seen in the way the viewer’s “glasses” were designed for them to see us in.

In the performance, two women will perform and take the roles of both the man and woman parts. The holes in the separating screens allow you to look only in a certain way at the performance.

Throughout the performance, the viewer needs to physically find new viewpoints and follow the dancers. It requires the audience to adapt and engage in the constant change of their own views on the dancers and the performance.

The creation investigates new ways to engage with an audience. Demanding constant movement following the choreography, stimulating multiple senses besides sound and vision, giving more choices to the audience in determining its place and viewpoint in real time are all a part of the experience. The audience choices in the performance strengthen the bound and connections between it to performance and performers and initiate a deeper dialogue into the performance’s content.”
